The Yenching Academy provides a generous postgraduate scholarship that covers tuition fees, a travel stipend for one round-trip journey between each Scholar’s base city and Beijing, accommodations, and living costs on Peking University’s campus. The Academy offers a residential program aimed at creating a community of enthusiastic, globally oriented young innovators in the heart of China’s top university. Such close proximity to the academic infrastructure of Peking University provides a unique opportunity to participate and fully immerse oneself in the life of the university.

Benefits of Yenching Academy of Peking University Scholarship 2018

  1. Enrolled international students spend 12 months in residence at the Yenching Academy, with the possibility to extend for a second year
  2. For students from China (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), the program lasts 24 months
  3. Upon completion of their year in residence, students have up to one more year to finalize projects and defend their thesis
  4. During this period, students in good academic standing may apply for a limited number of Teaching, Research, or Administrative Assistantships
  5. In addition, Dean’s Research Grants will be awarded on a bi-annual basis to help fund selected research projects related to China Studies.

Eligibilities for Yenching Academy of Peking University Scholarship 2018

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field, awarded no later than August 31 of the year in which they wish to enroll;
  • An outstanding academic record;
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China;
  • A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement and social responsibility;
  • Leadership potential;
  • English proficiency.
  • Preference is given to candidates age 25 or younger as of August 31 of the year they wish to enroll. For students from countries with mandatory military service, the age preference is 27 years old or younger.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Each applicant will create an account on the Yenching Academy admissions portal and submit the following materials in English:

  • Completed online application form;
  • Personal statement (750 words or less);
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Official transcript(s);*
  • Diploma(s) or Certificate(s) of Enrollment;*
  • Two letters of recommendation;
  • International English proficiency test score (at least IELTS 7/TOEFL 100/Cambridge 180/CEFR C1).**
  • International candidates and those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan may begin applying August 15, 2017. There are two deadlines, associated with candidates’ universities:
  1. Dec. 11, 2017: Universities in the United States and Canada;
  2. Jan. 15, 2018: Universities in all other countries.

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is a nongovernmental organization whose Fund is solely based on donations from many Japanese people who have responded with goodwill to Dr. Shigeyoshi MATSUMAE’s call.

Host Institution In Japan: Applicants are free to select host institutions (university research laboratories, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities of private industry)

Funded By: The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF)

Fields of Research Study: Fields of research such as natural science, engineering and medicine are considered with first priorities.

Eligible Countries & Regions: Open for All (except Japan)

Period & Number of Fellowships: For a period of from three to six months; the number of fellowships is about 20 persons each year.

Benefits of Research Fellowship Programme:

The following supports are provided to the successful applicants-

  1. Allowance for research and stay: ¥220,000- per month is provided for the purpose of tuition payment, expenses for research materials, and miscellaneous living expenses.
  2. Insurance: Overseas Travel Accident/Sickness Insurance: (1) Personal accident insurance with death benefit and medical treatment, (2) Sickness insurance with death benefit and medical treatment.
  3. Air transportation: A coach class round-trip air tickets between an airport nearest to the successful applicant’s domicile and Tokyo via most direct and economical routing is provided. The tickets provided cannot be converted to cash, nor can cash provided by MIF be used for purchasing air tickets.
  4. Start-up Fund upon arrival: ¥120,000- is provided to cover the initial costs to start a new research stay in Japan.
  5. Study Tour: To promote more profound understanding of Japan’s culture, tradition, and history, MIF organizes a Study Tour during the invitation period in Japan.
  6. Research Report: MIF issues a “Research Report” containing voluntary reports received from the MIF research fellows upon the completion of the MIF research fellowship stay in Japan.
  7. Continued Contact: In order to develop the global network among the fellows even after they go back to the home countries, MIF issues various publications and send them to the fellows.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to
submit the required application documents.
1. Applicants must obtain a Letter of Invitation from host institutions in Japan.
2. Applicants must hold a PH.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic
qualifications.
3. Applicants must be at the age of 49 years old or younger at the time when documents are submitted.
4. Applicants must have sufficient abilities in the English or Japanese languages.
5. Applicants should not have past or current experiences of staying in Japan. (Except for short-term stay. E.g.
sightseeing, conferences)
6. Applicants should be in employment in their home countries, and must return to their countries upon
completion of their MIF fellowship tenure.
7. Applicants must be of sound health.
