Times of Youth: Do tell us a little about yourself for those who may not know about you or your work.
Karim Metwaly: My name is Karim Metwaly and I am an Actor. I have been acting ever since I was a little kid with my first play being Julius Caesar where I played Julius Caesar. I am very proud of that. I began jumping into the entertainment field of social media such as YouTube to expand my reach of an audience and always being able to exercise my passion, and that is entertainment and acting through video making.
Times of Youth: Which projects of yours are you most proud about?
Karim Metwaly: I am most proud of my parody “Ganin Style” and “New York On Islam”. These two videos have played a helping hand in breaking the common stereotypes, like Muslims/Arabs can’t have fun or are too serious. They have also spread a light hearted (much needed) view on my faith, Islam. It gave everyone a chance to see a different side of us Muslims and Non-Muslims, thus embracing it.
Times of Youth: If you weren’t an entertainer, what would you rather be?
Karim Metwaly: Can’t imagine myself being anything else, but if I had to choose then it will probably be a Game Designer.
Times of Youth: Has making fun of others ever backfired for you?
Karim Metwaly: No never, the people I make fun of are people I love and adore. I look up to them and it is just for fun and I hope they don’t take it serious. I even make fun of myself. After all it is entertainment, right? It is like paying homage. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you aren’t living.
Times of Youth: Who’s sense of humor have you admired the most in your life?
Karim Metwaly: Definitely the JC’s. Jackie Chan and Jim Carrey. Very physical and “out there” comedy. The best thing about it is that anyone can understand it and laugh, because it is so physical. They inspire a lot of what I do.
Times of Youth: What is one question nobody has ever asked you— that you wish they asked you?
Karim Metwaly: Hey, can you be in my high budget Hollywood film? I want you to play the lead role. (Cough Christopher Nolan cough J.J. Abrams)
Yeah I would love to be hired by those guys, they have created really great art for our time.
Times of Youth: On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate yourself as an entertainer, honestly?
Karim Metwaly: There is no scale, it is either I’m good or I’m not. I think I’m good. Please don’t take it as arrogance. In this industry you have to be confident or you’ll get eaten alive. I do have flaws and that is I am always to critical of myself and very apprehensive.
Times of Youth: Do tell us a noteworthy funny incident or anecdote that you just can’t forget.
Karim Metwaly: My Dad once caught me in a female’s outfit. However, he did not know it was for a video and it was my first time. So you can imagine what was running through his head and my head. We stood there silent staring at each other for minutes.
Times of Youth: Tell us one quote which you hold very dear to your heart.
Karim Metwaly: “Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position” –Brian Tracy
Times of Youth: Is there any piece of advice which you wished someone would have given you at the start of your career? And what should it have been?
Karim Metwaly: Yes. I wish someone told me this. If you find something you love doing, do it. But don’t take your loved one’s for granted and leave them behind!
Times of Youth: What makes your day? And what spoils it?
Karim Metwaly: Waking up in the morning, breathing, seeing beautiful things people create in our world- art, music, prayer, family… I can keep going on. What spoils it? Well, I don’t think like that. I always like to be positive to attract the positive. I don’t like being negative.
Times of Youth: In this fast paced world, with all the craziness and work loads, how do you de-stress?
Karim Metwaly: I play video games, watch a movie or listen to music.
Times of Youth: Where do you see yourself in next 5 years?
Karim Metwaly: I hate this question. I’ll never know. I just want to keep working and doing what I do best. When I was younger, they asked me, “where do I see myself in 20 years”, in my teens they asked in 10 years and now 5. We forget to enjoy the present, the now. We should instead always set a goal and that goal for me is to be in a wonderful film and work for it in the now. NEVER give it a deadline though, it will fly by you before you can even plan it.
Times of Youth: If you’d be given an opportunity to meet any one person in the world, who would it be? And why?
Karim Metwaly: Jackie Chan. He is so fun, so pure as a person and has been through a lot. He has also donated so much money, more then Hollywood stars here in America. He never stops helping others. Here is a fun fact. Jackie Chan puts his name on products, food, instruments, etc. and they sell. However, he said he never keeps the money he makes from anything else other than his movies. Everything else he makes money from, other than his movies, he gives to charity. Yeah he is no joke, find me someone who does that. I have so much respect for this man. Oh, and plus he is awesome and does freaking awesome stunts and movies!
