Artist from France

My mosaic is my character- colourful, open minded, in the mood for something new, and constantly searching for new combinations.
-Inessa Besset

Times of Youth: For those who don’t know about you and your work, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Inessa Besset: Mosaic is part of my nature. When I was 15-16 years old, I liked to paint using different spices. Their natural colours charmed me. As I didn’t have a workshop, I worked at home, and my room smelled very good.

Later, I did a lot of collages, and I still like the art of putting together by using different materials, pictures, words and catchwords, and creating something new. It’s very creative, and every detail is of paramount importance.

The collages led me to mosaic. I felt a real need to use new materials, to touch something new.

Times of Youth: How would you describe your work to someone who has never known about it?

Inessa Besset: My mosaic is very atypical. My works are very specific. I like using various materials; I like mixing textures and colours. I can imagine, for example, the sun made by different bolts and screw and nuts.

Times of Youth: What sparked your initial interest in arts?

Inessa Besset: Mosaic is a form of expression for me. So my mosaic is my character- colourful, open minded, in the mood for something new, and constantly searching for new combinations.

Times of Youth: At what age did you start doing all this work? Has your family always been supportive of this choice of career?

Inessa Besset: I started doing mosaic works 8 years ago. At the beginning it was just a hobby. But I understood very quickly that this art form is very important for me. I can express myself and my feelings with a huge variety of materials, colours, and textures. And this proves to be interesting for a lot of people. There's always something for everyone.

Times of Youth: If not this, what else would you have taken up as your 2nd career of choice and why?

Inessa Besset: Yes, this in fact is my 2nd career. Because I have another career– I am specialized in marketing and digital communication. I like the world of communication and I am happy to be able to take care of my social networks myself.

Times of Youth: On a scale of 1 – 10, how would you rate yourself as an artist, honestly?

Inessa Besset: I think it's not up to me to evaluate myself. I take great pleasure as an artist of mosaicism.

I have a new project to work with the drawings of children. They are very colourful, merry and funny. These works allow to keep up the worldview of the child. So I started working with children and I note that it's really fascinating. The children are very happy to see a serious approach to their art works; I’m pleased to note the growing interest in this artistic expression in general.

Times of Youth: Where do you see yourself in next 5 years?

Inessa Besset: Recently I’ve taken up working with recycled materials. For example, recycled glass beads from Ghana. Bottles and other glass items are broken into small fragments for making beads. With all these materials I create new objects and I underline the importance of using recycled beads.
In the future, I will continue to promote “the art of recycling” to show that it’s important and useful, infinitely reusable and above all, very beautiful!
